High-speed airotors

NSK covers the full span, from a dependable everyday turbine to a titanium fibre-optic flagship.

The NSK Pana Air FX (PAF-SU B2) is the workhorse — a standard-head, push-button airotor at an accessible price.

At the top sits the Ti-Max line: titanium body, ceramic bearings, LED illumination and a clean head system. The NSK Ti-Max Z900L is the standard-head fibre-optic model, with a miniature-head Z800L for tighter access.

Contra-angles and straight handpieces

Low-speed work needs different gearing. NSK offers 1:1 contra-angles for routine restorative, 16:1 reduction heads for endodontics, and straight handpieces for trimming and lab work. Ti-Max X and Z contra-angles carry the same titanium and ceramic-bearing build as the airotors.

Implant and surgical handpieces

Implant drilling needs torque, not speed. A 20:1 reduction handpiece delivers it, with internal irrigation and an anti-suck-back system for a sterile field. The NSK Ti-Max X-SG20L 20:1 is the fibre-optic titanium implant handpiece in that line. NSK also builds the Surgic implant motors and the VarioSurg piezo bone-surgery unit.

Endodontics — motors and apex locators

Rotary endodontics needs controlled torque and accurate working length.

The NSK EndoMate DT is a programmable endo motor with variable speed and torque control.

Working length is measured separately. The NSK iPex II Apex Locator reads the apex electronically, and NSK also sells it combined with an EndoMate motor.

Ultrasonic scalers

The Varios line covers scaling, periodontal debridement and endodontic irrigation from one unit. The NSK Varios 370EU is the compact complete set.

Cartridges and spare parts

This is the quiet strength of the range. A worn turbine does not mean a new handpiece. NSK sells the cartridge on its own for Pana Air, Pana Max, Ti-Max, Dyna LED and Mach-Lite heads, so a clinic replaces the bearing assembly and keeps the handpiece.

What is the Clean Head System?

When a turbine stops, the pressure drop can suck oral fluids back into the head. That is how contamination spreads between patients.

NSK's Clean Head System is an anti-suck-back mechanism that blocks this. It was introduced in 1993 and now runs through most of the range. It is one of the reasons NSK handpieces are specified in infection-control-conscious practices.

Which NSK airotor should I choose?

Work down from what the case needs:

• Budget, everyday cutting — Pana Air FX. Non-optic, standard head, push button.
• Illuminated field — Dyna LED. LED light without the titanium price.
• Best handling and access — Ti-Max Z or X. Titanium, fibre optic, ceramic bearings. Choose a miniature head for posterior and paediatric access, a standard head for general power.
• Heavy cutting — a super-torque head such as the X700L.

Check your coupling before ordering: B2 (2-hole Borden) and M4 (4-hole Midwest) are not interchangeable.

Keeping an NSK handpiece running

A handpiece is a consumable that lasts years if it is looked after:

• Lubricate after every use, before autoclaving.
• Autoclave to the maker's cycle.
• Replace the cartridge when the head gets noisy or loses power.

When a handpiece gets noisy, loses power or the chuck stops gripping, the bearing assembly is usually the problem — replacing the cartridge restores it far more cheaply than buying a new handpiece.

How do I make an NSK handpiece last?

Lubricate it after every use and before autoclaving, then sterilise it to the manufacturer's cycle. Do not run it dry, and do not skip the oil. Replace the cartridge when performance drops rather than pushing a worn bearing. Handled this way, an NSK handpiece gives years of service; neglected, it fails in months.
