A dental autoclave sterilises with saturated steam under pressure. Instruments are held at 121–134 °C and around 15 psi for a set time, and that combination of heat and moisture destroys bacteria, viruses, fungi and the resistant spores that ordinary disinfection leaves behind. Because steam has to reach every surface, instruments are cleaned and loosely packed first so the chamber can penetrate the whole load.
Packing keeps instruments sterile after the cycle, not just during it.
