Airotor Cartridges
A high-speed handpiece is mostly a shell. The part that spins the bur, grips it and sprays coolant onto it is a single sealed unit inside the head — and it wears out long before the body around it does.
This is why a handpiece that has gone rough is rarely scrap. Swapping that unit restores cutting performance for a fraction of the price of a new instrument, provided the replacement matches the head it goes into.
Types available
OEM cartridges for branded handpieces
Manufacturers build each turbine to one head. NSK's range alone spans Ti-Max, Pana Air, Pana Max, Mach-Lite XT, Dyna LED and S-Max, each with its own part code — and a code that is nearly right will not seat. The NSK NCH-SU03 cartridge fits the Ti-Max 450 fibre-optic standard head, for instance.
Aftermarket and value cartridges
For handpieces outside the premium brands, or where cost per replacement matters more than matching an original part, aftermarket versions cover the common head formats. The Apple Dental airotor cartridges come in several fittings.
LED cartridges
Some generate their own light from the turbine's airflow, so the head illuminates the bur tip without any electrical supply to the handpiece. The Waldent LED airotor and cartridge is supplied this way.
Push-button chucks

- Check your connector format. Borden two-hole and Midwest four-hole are different air-line fittings; one will not run on the other without an adapter.
- Lubricate before the first cycle and after every sterilisation. Dry ceramic bearings seize quickly, and that is the most common reason a new one fails early.
